‘THINK, SID, THINK.’ The alarm screamed through the storage facility, high and mechanical and endless, the sound bouncing off concrete walls and corrugated steel until it seemed to come from everywhere at once.

Sid Bassett sat in the corner with his legs stretched out in front of him, the back of his head resting against the seam where two concrete walls met behind him. His hands hung at his sides, dark and wet beneath the pulsing emergency lights as the metallic smell of fresh iron mixed with gunpowder, sweat, damp concrete, and the stale dusty odor of an old warehouse sealed too long against the world.
